Mentor Program
SUMMA (Syracuse University Mentor Mentee Alliance) is a one-to-one mentoring program offered at the High School for Leadership and Public Service where 10th, 11th and 12th grade students are matched with young, successful graduates of Syracuse University who live and work in New York City, in a relationship that aims to improve both academic and social skills. It is the largest and most successful program of its kind in the city, and is acknowledged as such by the Mayor and the Chancellor of Education.
The definition of a mentor is a "wise and trusted friend." SUMMA mentors are required spend at least four hours per month with their students and are expected to maintain regular contact by email and telephone during the remainder of the month. Mentoring pairs enjoy SUMMA sponsored events, such as group dinners, holiday parties, softball in Central Park, ice skating, bowling and participation in community service events. Together they plan activities, intended to help enhance the students' academic performance, college preparation as well as explore and enjoy the city! Pairs are expected to complete at least two community service activities per semester during the academic year.
Leadership students undergo a lengthy application process to be eligible for the SUMMA program. They are required to obtain teacher recommendations, must demonstrate academic superiority, and possess qualities that will make them successful candidates for the SUMMA program, such as maturity, dedication and responsibility. Mentor applicants must attend a three-hour NYC Department of Education training at which time they are requested to submit their fingerprints and provide three personal references which are verified by the DOEd.
The program kicks off in September in association with the start of the academic year.
