Seven SU Interns Join HSALPS Seven interns from Syracuse University will spend the Spring working with the staff and students at the High School for Public Leadership. Principal Pendergast has invited us to come see the interns in action at the school. Welcome Interns!

Recruiting for SU Summer College Begins! Teacher Amy Strassler is recruiting the best and the brightest for SU Summer College on campus, a six week program for 11th grade students during which they will live on campus and take two 3-credit college courses. This program is paid for by the Friends of Leadership and Syracuse University. The summer scholarship includes tuition, room and board, books and travel. Mentors: if your student is eligible and has not yet spoken with Ms. Strassler, encourage him/her to do so.

SUMMA Mentor & Mentee Win Honorable Mention from DOE!! Mentor Tessa Tinney and Mentee Danielle Hughes have won an Honorable Mention from the Department of Education for their letters about their experiences together in SUMMA. Each wrote a moving letter about what they'd gained from their experience as SUMMA members, and they will be recognized in a DOE statement and upcoming newsletter. Congratulations!!

The Friends Welcome Two New Members

The Friends of the Leadership and Public Service High School are proud to welcome Nate Shanok and Allison Weingarten to our group. Nate and Allison are SUMMA Mentors and a very active participants in SUMMA events. We're delighted to have them as Friends.

Friends Serve as Co-Principals For-A-Day

Scott Bloom and Donald Schupak served as Co-Principals at The Leadership and Public Service High School on October 16th. You can learn more about the Principal For A Day Program at www.pencil.org.

Lawrence Pendergast joins the Leadership and Public Service High School!

The Friends are proud to welcome Lawrence Pendergast as the new Principal at the Leadership and Public Service High School. Lawrence brings a breadth of experience to his position and has an exciting vision to give the Leadership and Public Service High School students the best chance of success.

Seven the Leadership and Public Service High School students matriculate at Syracuse University in the Fall.

The Leadership and Public Service High School is proud to announce that seven of its students were accepted to Syracuse University and matriculated in the Fall. Four of the students were involved in the Syracuse University Mentor Mentee Alliance (SUMMA) program. The students are: Angie Garcia, Karina Gutierrez, Yiu Chung Ho, Christine Moore, Ashley Santos, Hong Fen Wang, Jason Zhao.

Dan Fielding, a Leadership and Public Service High School teacher, receives $15,000 grant from the Sierra Club

Dan Fielding, a faculty member in the Leadership and Public Service High School's Science Department, wrote and received a grant for $15,000 from the Sierra Club. The grant will be used to take students on field trips, including one to YMCA Camp Frost Valley.

SU Interns at the Leadership and Public Service High School

Five Syracuse University students spent the spring 2008 semester interning at the Leadership and Public Service High School. As part of their curriculum, the SU interns developed a program in conjunction with the Maxwell School to assist students at the Leadership and Public Service High School explore career possibilities.

Poetry Reading at the Leadership and Public Service High School

On May 22nd, the Leadership and Public Service High School will host a reading of "14 Floors," a book of poetry written by faculty members of the Leadership and Public Service High School. The poems will be read by students from the high school
